Cassina celebrates the 50th anniversary of Le Corbusier’s LC Collection

December 19, 2014

In today’s market of replicas and cheap knock-off furniture, Cassina is one company working to protect the culture and heritage of design.

Next year marks two golden anniversaries in the European furniture industry, celebrating 50 years since the passing of visionary designer Le Corbusier, in the same year that Italian furniture house Cassina signed the exclusive contract to produce his iconic furniture.

Along with Le Corbusier, furniture designers Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand’s decision to sign with Cassina was a landmark for the brand, which explored latest innovations in manufacture in order to maintain the quality of the designer’s furniture.

In fact, while Cassina began producing Le Corbusier’s unique furniture in 1965, the company hit upon technical challenges previously unfamiliar to the manufacture industry. As a result of this, Cassina were able to introduce new methods of furniture manufacture.

Significantly, Cassina were able to establish the curve of chrome-plated tubular steel through a bending process, instead of the accepted method of welding at a 90° angle. Cassina also began including polyurethane foam padding as well as feathers in their upholstery, also considered an innovative technique at the time, making it possible for furniture to retain precise shape and form.

In today’s market of replicas and cheap knock-off furniture, Cassina is one company working to protect the culture and heritage of design. Currently, Cassina is the only authorised company to produce designs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, working in close collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation and the heirs of the designers.
