Melbourne design studio Yellow Diva releases a series of anodised aluminium pendant lights inspired by the clear night sky.

Firmament is a new pendant light inspired by the clear night sky, designed by Melbourne studio, Yellow Diva.

Made from hand-spun anodised aluminium, Firmament features a hemispherical shade that has been pierced with hand plotted, laser-cut stars. Though seemingly random, these tiny apertures on the shade depict the constellations of the night sky. The piece takes its name from the notion that the sky is a solid, dome-shaped canopy.

Available in two versions, the Production Edition features a plain anodised interior, while the inside of the Constellation Edition has been hand-engraved with the months of the year and the names of the constellations depicted on the shade. There is also the option to select the northern night sky, depicting the constellations as seen from London (the Northern Firmament, with a gold anodised interior), or the southern night sky, with the constellations as seen from Melbourne (the Southern Firmament, with a silver anodised interior).

The pendants are designed and made in Australia, and can be ordered in a number of different external finishes: midnight blue, blood red, pitch black or lunar white. The lamps are fitted with a nickel/brass E27 lampholder and 3m cloth-covered lighting flex in coordinating colours (blue, red, black or white). A 5W dimmable LED E27 95mm round globe is available separately.

Firmament is currently on show in Sydney for Sydney Indesign (15-17 August 2013).
