Wikkelso V11 seating range

September 15, 2011

An elegant mid-century seating collection designed by Danish designer Ilum Wikkelso, brought back into production by Great Dane Furniture.

Originally created by Danish designer Illum Wikkelso in 1965, the V11 seating range is a collection of beautifully crafted leather seats. Wikkelso’s design features a low, wide leather seat with elegant tapered legs and is a classic piece of mid-century design. Original V11 pieces are rare and highly sought after on the international furniture market, with originals reportedly found in the office of the Japanese president and in the collection of King Feisel of Saudi Arabia.

Australian furniture company Great Dane Furniture has now brought the V11 seating range back into production in celebration of this timeless Scandinavian furniture collection. Each piece is made from beginning to end by Great Dane’s master craftsmen to create a piece of elegant, high quality furniture that is true to Wikkelso’s 1965 design. The range includes the V11 three-seater sofa, easy chair and footstool, available in black or caramel leather.

Born in Denmark in 1919, Illum Wikkelso trained as a cabinetmaker before learning the art of furniture construction at the School of Arts & Crafts (Kunsthaandværkerskolen) in Copenhagen. He studied under master furniture maker Knud Christiansen in Aarhus in 1944-5, before working as an architect in Copenhagen until the mid-1950s, founding his own business in 1954. Wikkelso continued to design his beautifully crafted furniture pieces until his death in 1999.
