Sam Sam

October 12, 2011

Henry Pilcher’s simple and functional coat rack, Sam Sam, wins Corporate Culture’s 2011 Design Journey.

Henry Pilcher’s coat rack, Sam Sam, is the winner of this year’s Design Journey – a competition run by Corporate Culture that challenges designers to produce a piece that fills a gap in the furniture market.

Sam Sam is a timber coat rack inspired by the notion of controlled chaos. The simple and functional piece is designed to transform the process of offloading items of clothing into an act of adornment.

The piece features five timber dowels that splay as if a collection of sticks were collapsing to the ground. Two star-shaped powdercoated metal elements (a steel bottom piece, and an aluminium upper piece) and rubber washers hold the dowels in place, creating an efficient and practical aesthetic. The joinery techniques require no intensive labour and are simply assembled, while the use of common materials ensures the piece is unpretentious and functional.

Design Journey is an annual competition run by Corporate Culture that encourages designers to engage with the company’s existing range of furniture and design a piece that would complement the current collection.
