Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has been chosen as the 2009 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture’s highest honour.
Thomas Pritzker, Hyatt Chairman described Zumthor as ‘a master architect admired by his colleagues around the world … all of Peter Zumthor’s buildings have a strong, timeless presence’.
The judges also commented that Zumthor’s architecture ‘expresses a respect for the primacy of the site, the legacy of a local culture and the invaluable lesson of architectural history’.
In response, Zumthor remarked how proud he felt that a small body of work such as ‘ours is recognised in the professional world and should give hope to young professionals’. ‘If they strive for quality in their work it might become visible without any special promotion’, the 65-year old architect added.
