Sydney Metro signs up leading architects for ‘design workshops’

Sydney Metro has asked some of the city’s leading architects to participate in design workshops and propose a set of design principles for two new metro stations at Pyrmont and Rozelle.

Architects Tim Greer, Richard Francis-Jones and Keith Cottier are among those selected as participants. Three teams, each consisting of an architect, a landscape architect and an artist, will meet with peak, professional and community groups on Tuesday 27 October, for the first of two workshops.

Each team will discuss ideas at the first workshop, and then have two weeks to draw up their designs. The designs will then be discussed at a second workshop, with the aim of establishing a set of ‘design principles’.

A spokesperson for Sydney Metro explained, “these designs will test the design principles for the stations before they are finalised and provided to the station design and construction contractor.”

The spokesperson added, “It is important to ensure that the design takes into account the community’s vision and the workshops will result in a clear direction for the contractors.”

The three teams are: Tim Greer of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Leonard Lynch of Clouston, and Ruth Downes (Team 1); Richard Francis-Jones of fjmt, Ingrid Mather of JMD Design, and Michael Snape (Team 2); Keith Cottier of Allen Jack + Cottier, Adrian McGregor of McGregor Coxall, and Julia Davis (Team 3).

The State Government-funded Metro scheme has become a contentious issue in the city, where the public transport network is in need of considerable improvement. The _Sydney Morning Herald_ reports that councillors are demanding the Metro plans be scrapped, instead urging the government to develop the light rail system to areas where the lack of public transport is more apparent.

Following the NSW Local Government Conference in Tamworth, the paper reported: “The councillors unanimously supported a motion from Hunters Hill Council to demand the Government start building the Epping to Chatswood, north-west and south-west rail links.

“The Hunters Hill motion included a call for the Government to provide funding for a feasibility study on the extension of the light rail system from Central Station to Circular Quay and from Central to Dulwich Hill.”
