More than 500 works of street art, furniture and objects collected by renowned Melbourne street artist Andy Mac over the last 20 years will go up for sale this weekend.
Andy Mac’s collection of stencils, graffiti work, posters, paintings ceramics, furniture and clothing – amassed over the last two decades –will be sold through South Yarra-based auction house Leonard Joel on Sunday 6 May.
Renowned street artist Andy Mac is the director of the Citylights Project, an independent arts project founded in 1995. Featuring a series of 12 permanent lightboxes installed along Hosier Lane in Melbourne’s CBD, Citylights began displaying street art as artworks and helped promote graffiti and stencilling as part of a contemporary urban art movement during the 1990s.
The project pre-empted the rise in popularity of street art, and continues to run in Hosier Lane – now one of Melbourne’s busiest destinations for fans of street art. The project has since displayed the work of over 400 artists, and is now complemented by Until Never – Mac’s gallery, also on Hosier Lane, established in 2005.
Mac is now selling more than 500 pieces from his private collection at a public auction through Leonard Joel. Included in the auction are works by local and international street artists, among them Shepard Fairey, Husmann/Tschaeni, Dolk Lundgren, Paul McNeil and Magnus McTavish, as well as furniture pieces by Clement Meadmore and Grant Featherston.

One noteworthy piece included in the sale is the Freeze Muthastika, a 72-panel collaborative artwork painted by 17 artists on-site at the Big Day Out festival in 2004. Mac says the piece is a “time capsule of Melbourne street art” in the early 2000s.
“It is not just the sheer scale of the work, its original purpose and the number of artists involved in its creation,” he explains. “For me, this work sums up what the walls of Hosier Lane looked like in 2004, and is the first time that many of the key players of this period in street art collaborated together.”
