The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced the five teams competing for the position of Creative Director of the Australian Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

The five teams were selected from 27 expressions of interest, submitted after the Institute called for proposals in May. Teams submitted an outline of their vision for the exhibition, with details of key members.

The five shortlisted teams and their proposals for the exhibition theme are:
*The Voyage/voyeur* – Amelia McPhee and Andrew Maynard
*Super Seed* – Jan van Schaik, Cameron Bruhn and Andy Sargent
*Practice Formations, Agency and Architecture* – Gerard Reinmuth and Anthony Burke with TOKO
*Rising Inflection: From here to there to here to here to there…….* – Robert Grace with team members Monique Vaute, Denise Neri, Richard Allan, Liz Stirling, Felicity D Scott, Esther Charlesworth, Joanna Goldstein, Warren Ellis, Labotorio Morsoletto, Linus Gruszewski
*The Office for Opportunistic Architecture* – Rory Hyde and Kate Rhodes with Justine Clark

Each team now has four weeks to complete their Stage 2 submissions in time for presentation to the Venice Committee in August. The team appointed as Creative Directors will be announced in late September.

The exhibition at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, ‘NOW and WHEN: Australian Urbanism’ by Creative Directors John Gollings and Ivan Rijavec attracted a record-breaking 93,000 visitors. The exhibition is currently on show at Object: The Australian Centre for Craft and Design in Sydney.
