Sydney based designer, Seaton McKeon, will see his design dreams realised when his Press Pendant begins production with leading Danish design house, &tradition.

McKeon’s innovative lighting design was selected from a group of five finalists to win the Northern Lights Competition held during DesignEX in Melbourne earlier this year. Presented by a partnership between &tradition and Australian furniture retailer, Great Dane, the prize promises the young designer the coveted opportunity of having his design manufactured and distributed internationally. It also includes a trip to Copenhagen, where he will get an unprecedented look behind the scenes of one of Scandinavia’s leading furniture manufacturers.

The judges agreed the Press Pendant is versatile and clever – fitting the competition brief for a simple, iconic and competitively priced pendant light that would suit both the residential and contract markets. Martin Kornbek Hansen, founder of &tradition, said of the winning design: “Seaton has used modern materials of PET and felt, but with classic references in the simplicity of the design’s shape and form.”

Seaton says he drew inspiration from the recycled material. “I loved the softness of it. You can get somewhat rigid forms out of it, yet it retains a soft, tactile quality; it feels like felt.”

Great Dane’s Anton Assaad said the design was a good fit for the &tradition ethos for “tradition tied to innovation”: “By sticking closely to the brief Seaton’s design demonstrated tradition tied to innovation. We feel it will have great potential in the market and are excited to nurture young talent.”
