Quicksmart Homes have won an ACT Sustainable Cities Award for their contribution to sustainable development with their first Australian project, completed earlier this year. They received the award for [“Laurus Wing at the Australian National University”:https://www.australiandesignreview.com/news/15565-Prefab-student-housing-made-from-shipping-containers] (ANU), the first large-scale project using container-architecture in Australia.??
The award is presented by Keep Australia Beautiful, an initiative to motivate and celebrate local sustainability achievements in each state and territory. The Laurus Wing was the winner of the Sustainable Buildings and Gardens: Commercial category within the ACT, and is part of the ANUs commitment to green campus. ??
Unlike the traditional green method of recycling used containers, the shipping containers were created new for this project and each modular incorporates thermal designs that exceed Australian standards. In an effort to reduce energy consumption, each of the campus units have double-glazing and draft control as standard features. Quicksmart also claims their buildings can halve construction times and save up to 20 per cent on the price of traditionally constructed buildings.
The six-story Laurus wing consists of 204 pre-fabricated modular units based on shipping containers created in China, and was completed just six months after the materials were initially ordered for the project. An 84 module wing was opened in January in time for the beginning of the University academic year, with second and third phases adding 120 tailor-made units to the complex. All three stages of construction were in partnership with Hutchinson Builders.
??Despite the modulars being created offsite and delivered to the location, Quicksmart Homes has proven with the Laurus project that modular construction does not have to compromise design or aesthetic. Modular design means that construction for campus and residential accommodation and healthcare facilities can be fast-tracked, while maintaining an intelligent and sustainable design.
??Quicksmart Homes delivers the highest environmental and sustainability standards as standard in our products. Additionally, the whole building could, in theory, be taken down and reused and that is a very sustainable offering. says Rufus Harding, Managing Director of Quicksmart Homes.
