The Western Australia state government has announced it plans to hold an international design competition for a major new sports stadium in Perth.
The new stadium will be the third largest stadium in Australia, with a capacity of 60,000 and provision for expansion to 70,000 in a manner similar to Melbournes Etihad Stadium.
Speaking at the announcement, Premier Colin Barrett said: The new Perth Stadium will deliver a high-quality, state-of-the-art facility To help us achieve this, there will be an international design competition to attract the best ideas.
The multi-functional stadium would be used for major football, cricket, soccer and rugby games as well as major cultural events. The stadium is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
The stadium precinct will be built on Burswood Peninsula, an area unconstrained by surrounding development and Government-owned, said the Premier. The project would help contribute to a growing eastside precinct, he added.
The projected cost of the stadium is currently $700 million, with an additional $300 million set aside for associated transport infrastructure in the area.
