Grimshaw Architects’ latest designs for the $300m addition to Highpoint shopping centre in Maribyrnong, western Melbourne has been revealed.
The new extension will add 30,000sqm to the existing centre, first built in 1975 – bringing the development to 156,000sqm and making it the second largest shopping centre in Australia after Chadstone. The centre will include space for an additional 100 retailers, along with large fitouts for a David Jones department store and supermarket Woolworths.
Grimshaw’s design intends to remove the barriers associated with traditional malls. A curving spine made from steel and timber runs through the eco mall at the centre of the development, drawing natural light into the interior. Timber and bluestone are used throughout the interior to strengthen the connection with the outside.
The separate sections of the centre have been designed with “soft organic curves and a warm inviting space,” encouraging visitors to move through the space and engage with the development, said Highpoint Development Manager Mark Pheely.
The project will reportedly include environmental initiatives including a hybrid ventilation system and a drought-resistant vegetation plan.
The development is being managed by GPT Group, co-owners of the shopping centre. The project is due for completion in early 2013.
