The South Australian Government has appointed Sydney architect Ben Hewett to the role of Government Architect, it was announced yesterday.
The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) welcomed the appointment, with the Institutes SA President David Holland saying the news signals a continuation of [the Governments] recent public commitment to the best built environment outcomes for South Australia.
Holland added: While South Australia is the last state in Australia to appoint a Government Architect, with the value of this role recognized in most states for some time, we are confident that the State Government has now developed a nation-leading design model.
Hewett will form an integral part of the states Integrated Design Commission (IDC), which was announced in late 2009. He will work together with SA Integrated Design Commissioner Tim Horton in his role at the IDC, which promotes the role of design within government policy.
The Integrated Design Commission offers the strongest national model for integrated design excellence, explained Holland. [It] will be a key initiative in enhancing the quality of Adelaides growth over the next 30 years.
