An energy harvesting canopy embedded with photovoltaic panels and wind turbines has been proposed for a Perugia laneway by Coop Himmelb(l)au principal, Wolf D. Prix. The practice hope the design will become a new architectural icon for the city.
The canopy, called the Energy Roof, is part of an archaeological research project at the University of Perugia. The project, entitled Walking through the History, proposes an excavation of the laneway, with the canopy providing the entry point to the area which would be transformed into an underground public gallery space.
Coop Himmelb(l)aus design would generate energy for the city, making the roof and the underground passage energy self-sufficient. The roof consists of three layers, including transparent photovoltaic cells, capturing solar energy and shading the area below, and five wind turbines embedded within the structural frame of the canopy.
The practice also say that the PV cells will be optimised by a computer driven scripting program, maximising the solar energy captured by the canopy.
