McBride Charles Ryan have been awarded the Grand Prix title at the 2010 Dulux Colour Awards for their design for Fitzroy High School, with judges praising their use of colour to enrich the learning environment.
The project, which was the winner in the Commercial Interior category, was commended for its use of colour both as a way-finder and an aesthetic, with paint choices providing a connection between interior and exterior areas of the school.
Other winners on the night included Suters, who won the Commercial Exterior category for their Churchill and District Intergenerational Community Hub. Judges commended the use of colour to create a distinctive, exciting presence set within a rural/suburban context, with vibrant colours drawing passers-by towards the building.
SJB Interiors topped the Residential Interior entries with Prahran House, a striking design that blends a bold, contemporary palette with period details; while Clare Cousins Architecture & Interior Design was awarded in the Residential Exterior category for 342 Apartments.
Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects succeeded in the Sustainable Interior category for their PTA Perth Underground Information Centre, which used uplifting and positive colours that create momentary spectacles for commuters working wonderfully to distract from any sense of enclosure that might be felt as commuters descend.
The announcement was made on Thursday 31 March at a gala ceremony held at The Guildford Lane Gallery in Melbourne. This years judging panel included Lyons Co-director Carey Lyon, Interior Designer Alison Page and contemporary artist Vincent Fantauzzo. The panel said there had been an impressive collection of finalists in this years awards, which this year also included entries from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea for the first time.
McBride Charles Ryan were presented with a return business-class airfare and five nights accommodation to attend 100% Design Tokyo, along with a $2,000 cash prize. All professional category winners were awarded a Dulux Colour Awards 2010 trophy and $1,500 cash, whilst student winner Joyce Pang received a trophy and $1,000 cash. Their projects will also be shown at DesignEX.

Drainage is often the forgotten workhorse of the building and design function. Yet drainage maintains a simple albeit vital purpose.
