Sydney’s Darling Quarter has received the 2012 President’s Award from the International Federation of Landscape Architects Asia Pacific (IFLA). With landscape architecture led by ASPECT Studios, the design involved input from Lend Lease, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt) and Hyder Consulting.

The redevelopment of Darling Quarter was a major 1.5-hectare place-making project for Sydney with a retail terrace, public park, two 6-star commercial buildings and a children’s playground as its centrepiece. The playground, at over 4000 square metres, is the largest in Sydney’s CBD.

The project aided in building a strong pedestrian link between the popular Darling Harbour district and the city, reinforcing movement between the Entertainment Centre, Cockle Bay and beyond. The redevelopment revitalised the area by upgrading ground plane materials, lighting, furniture and planting.

To date the Darling Quarter project has won 16 awards, including at this year’s World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
