Collins and Turner has won the competition to design a hospitality venue at Barangaroo South, it was announced this morning.
Providing tenancy space for a number of restaurants and bars at the new site, Collins and Turner’s building will be clad in bamboo and will encompass several spaces for outdoor dining as well as a rooftop terrace.
The competition proposal was praised by judges for its “artistic design”, which offered a “well-researched, well organised and flexible approach”.
The judges added: “Collins and Turner submitted an exciting, stylish concept that makes a strong visual statement and confidently holds its own among the other world-class designs at Barangaroo. We were also impressed that Collins and Turner ensured the restaurant and bar customers will be able to thoroughly enjoy the vibrancy and the views of the Sydney Harbour waterfront.”
The Sydney-based architecture studio was victorious over other shortlisted Sydney firms DRAW, LAVA, SCALE Architecture, Lacoste + Stevenson and Silvester Fuller.
Collins and Turner – a studio established by Penny Collins and Huw Turner in 2002 – was selected for the project by a judging panel including Ivan Harbour, from Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners – the masterplanners for Barangaroo South. Also on the panel with Harbour were Lend Lease and Barangaroo Delivery Authority representatives.
The jury also recognised the “delightful proposal” from SCALE Architecture, recommending that the firm be offered an opportunity to work on public realm elements at Barangaroo.
The two-month long design competition saw a selection of local, emerging design firms submit proposals for the site. From an initial list of firms drawn up by Lend Lease, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and the City of Sydney, 15 firms were invited to lodge an expression of interest and, from there, a shortlist of six firms was selected to take part in the competition.
“Our commitment to design excellence includes not only working with internationally renowned architectural practices but also identifying and supporting emerging local firms,” said Andrew Wilson, Lend Lease’s Barangaroo South managing director.
