The winners of the 2011 Annual Manual: A Guide to Australian Design Now were announced at Sydneys Object Gallery in April.
South Australian designers Daniel To and Emma Aiston, known as Daniel Emma, and Victorian designer Thomas Llewellyn were named as co-winners on Friday 8 April at the opening of the exhibition at Object. Chosen from a shortlist of 120 nominated entries from across the country, both winners were selected by the judging panel for a fresh and considered approach to object design representative of the innovative new design Object is proud to showcase.
Daniel Emmas collection D. E, a series of seven desk accessories, were described by judge and RMIT Design Hub curator Kate Rhodes as refined, quiet and inspiring pieces. The pair established their design partnership in 2009 following two years of experience in London-based design studios Marc Newson, Thorsten Van Elter and Committee.
RMIT industrial design graduate Thomas Llewellyn is based in Melbourne. His design, Drawing Board, provides space for two seated participants to share a central drawing board as a means of encouraging a collaborative design process. Thomas has created a conceptual piece that sends an idea out into the world, commented judge and co-founder of Office for Good Design, Dan Honey.
Daniel Emma and Llewellyn have won a shared exhibition in Object Gallerys Project Space in 2012. Object will also provide financial support to each designer to assist with creating work to be featured in the exhibition next year. The winning designs are currently on show in the Australian Design Now exhibition, in Objects Main Gallery space.
On this years judging panel were Kate Rhodes, RMIT Design Hub curator and creative director of the State of Design Festival; Dan Honey, co-founder of Office for Good Design and creative producer of the State of Design Festival; David Clark, editor of Vogue Living; and Steven Pozel, director of Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design.
The Australian Design Now exhibition (formerly known as Design Now!) showcases the best in new design from a selection of eight new designers, as selected by a panel of 20 design industry spotters. The final eight selected from over 120 nominations are: Aly De Groot, Kristel Britcher, Daniel Emma, Emily Nam, In-ah Shin, Esther Stewart, Meredith Turnbull and Thomas Llewellyn. The exhibition runs at Object Gallery from 9 April until 19 June 2011.
