An education project in Port Augusta designed by Tridente Architects has been presented with the top prize at the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) 2011 South Australia Architecture Awards.
Tridente Architects BER-funded Caritas College Junior School External Covered Area was awarded the Jack McConnell Award for Public Architecture. Jurors described the project as a remarkable blend of the pragmatic and the poetic, meeting a practical need but also creating a new identity for the school and a striking new landmark for the town.
The practice also received a Public Architecture Award for the Sacred Heart Senior College Marcellin Learning Centre, a school project with a striking, theatrical presence produced on a tight budget.
HASSELL and Cox also received a Public Architecture Award for their redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand. Faced with strong community concern about the impact of redevelopment on the identity and charm of one of world crickets most historic and picturesque grounds, a plethora of heritage constraints and a tight budget and program, the architects have responded with a structure that is both respectful of the past and a model for planned future stages.
BB Architects were awarded the John S Chappell Award for Residential Architecture, Houses, for 16R, a single bedroom addition to a heritage-listed cottage in Adelaide a unique and successful example of city living. The project also won a Small Project Award, and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture.
Three other houses were presented with awards: Con Bastiras Architect for Hyde Park House, Max Pritchard Architect for Fairway House, and Scholz Vinall for 3 on 300.
The Robert Dickson Award for Interior Architecture was presented to Grieve Gillett for the Yalumba Signature Cellar and Tanks 11 & 12. Grieve Gillett also received the Collaborative Design Architecture Award, for their South Australian Museum Biodiversity Gallery.
Sustainable Architecture Awards were presented to DesignInc for The University of Adelaide Innova 21, and Energy Architecture for Christies Beach High School Environmental Learning Centre.
Swanbury Penglase were presented with the Archicentre Alterations and Additions Award, as well as an award for Small Project Architecture, for Pavilion No. 4.
The Sir James Irwin Presidents Medal was this year presented to the Integrated Design Commission SA. Established in 2009, the IDC works with local and state governments, as well as the design, planning and development sector and the wider community to introduce design-led thinking to the state. Announcing the award, SA Chapter President Nick Tridente said: This years President Medal looks at the future and the potential in making South Australia something that dreams are made of.
Thirty-three projects were presented with awards, commendations and prizes at this years awards.
Working with Edra from the start, Italian designer Francesco Binfaré has produced some of the brand's classics, including the recent Pack and Chiara sofa.
