A series of new additions to a primary school by Darwin-based Troppo Architects has won four awards at the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) 2011 Northern Territory Architecture Awards.
The St Marys Catholic Primary School New Hall and Library, Reggio Emilia Early Learning Centre and Courtyard received the top prize at the state awards, the Tracy Memorial Award, as well as the Reverend John Flynn Award for Public Architecture, the Architecture Award for Urban Design, and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture.
The project includes the E Deck, described by jurors as a playful, theatrical roof providing shade for play and for teaching, as well as a new early learning facility installed within an existing building developed on the philosophies of Reggio Emilia with design principles of an architecture for the tropics on a very tight budget. The project also encompasses a new dedicated library and hall, developed with funding from the Federal Governments BER program.
Troppo Architects were also awarded in the residential category, taking home The Burnett Award for Residential Architecture Houses for Mortlock Lee House. Sited in a stringybark scrubland block, this project features a single pitched roof to the south that creates a light, airy internal volume, with a generous awning over the northern walls offering sun protection. Morlock Lee House also received the Peoples Choice Award.
Other winners on the night included AJAR ARCHITECTS, who received the Award for Small Project Architecture and a Commendation for Residential Architecture – Houses for Ambient Atelier, and TANGENTYERE DESIGN, who were awarded the Indigenous Community Architecture Award for the Kiwirrkurra Arts Centre. MODE DESIGN were also commended in the Residential Architecture Houses and the Urban Design categories, for the Ludmilla Tropical House and Casuarina Police Station respectively.
