JPW’s National Portrait Gallery wins at IES Lighting Awards

National Portrait Gallery and Paddington Reservoir among the winners at IES awards for lighting design.

The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra has received an Award of Excellence at the NSW IES Lighting Awards. Design agency Steensen Varming worked in collaboration with architects Johnson Pilton Walker to integrate the lighting systems with the existing architectural design of the gallery.

A unique feature of the award-winning project is the base lighting system for all perimeter walls; the first of its kind to be used in a major Australian gallery. The system uses recessed linear fluorescent wall washers, which are hidden by architectural detail. The wall washers are highly efficient and low in energy consumption, while creating a uniformed light colour that balances with the natural light.

The design of the gallery incorporates natural light in the public spaces, and Steensen Varming’s design therefore needed to complement the natural daylight with the artificial lighting, allowing both to work together to enhance the architectural space.

Eight submissions received Awards of Commendation, with awards going to Point of View’s Events Cinema Castle Hill Gold Class Lounge, Point of View’s Epping to Chatswood Railway Link, AECOM’s Queen Victoria Building access stairs, Webb Australia Group’s Sydney Cricket Ground, Northrop’s DLA Phillip Fox offices, Haron & Robson’s Paddington Reservoir and Haron & Robson’s Bankstown District Sports Club.

The IES lighting awards judge submissions on criteria including style and structure, architectural and environmental design, originality of concept, visual comfort and appropriate application, energy effectiveness, adherence to budget constraints and operation and maintenance.
