Australian firms win at International Architecture Awards

Sean Godsell, Harry Seidler & Associates and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects are recognised in the 2009 International Architecture Awards.

Australian firms Sean Godsell, Harry Seidler & Associates and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects were among the 97 winners announced at the 2009 International Architecture Awards, recognising new projects and urban schemes from around the world.

Glenburn House by Sean Godsell, the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre by Harry Seidler & Associates, and the Carriageworks Contemporary Performing Arts Centre by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects were recognised by the jury, who were looking for projects that “challenge new approaches to design that are beyond the envelope of the everyday”.

The awards were organised by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd, and co-presented by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studios. This year’s awards were hosted in Finland.

The awards recognise foremost architectural solutions from around the world, and aim to provide an important overview of design and architecture on a global scale. This year, the awards attracted submissions from firms in 30 different countries.

This year’s jury convened in Helsinki, Finland, with the support of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA). The jurors were Rainer Mahlamäki, president of SAFA and Principal of Architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki; Kaj Forsblom from Galerie Forsblom, Kivi Sotamaa, Principal of SOTAMAA DESIGN Ltd; Anne Stenros, Vice President and Design Director of KONE Ojy.; Ilkka Suppanen, Architect/Designer from Studio Suppanen; and Markku Valkonen, Director of EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art.
