Bombay Sapphire design award: finalists announced

Top ten finalists for key Australian design awards announced.

The ten finalists for the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Awards have been announced. The awards are an important event for the Australian design community, and aim to promote emerging Australian designers who are establishing their careers.

This year’s finalists are:

David Knott ‘The Daily Grind’
Gary Galego ‘Carbonwood’
Helen Kontouris ‘Breathe’
Joseph Ormrod ‘Genus – Side Table’
Kain Lucas ‘Victoria Side Table’
Marcel Sigel ‘Weddell’
Rohan Nicol ‘Peppered Sunlight’
Tomek Archer ‘PegLeg’

The finalists, selected from a record 90 submissions, must now present their designs to the panel of judges in October, before their work is entered as part of the Design Discovery Award Exhibition.

This year, the judging panel includes Liane Rossler from Dinosaur Designs, David Clark from Vogue Living, UTS Professor of Design Kees Dorst, Parcel’s Heidi Dokulil and Propeller’s Ewan McEoin, Top3 by Design’s Terri Winter, fashion retailer Belinda Seper and design expert Jennifer Sanders.

The winner will receive a $30,000 grant and a trip to Milan for the 2010 Salone del Mobile. Four runners up will receive $2,500 each, and the remaining five finalists will be given $1,000.

On display at one of Sydney’s premier design bars, Establishment, from 9-30th November 2009, the Design Discovery Award Exhibition will showcase Australian design talent to a wide audience. The exhibition will then travel to Melbourne and Brisbane venues in early 2010.

The top prize has previously been won by Jon Goulder, Adam Goodrum, Lucas Chirnside, Charles Wilson, BernabeiFreeman, Trent Jansen and Ilias Fotopoulos.

The winner will be announced on 18 November 2009 by an international guest VIP (to be announced) at a private ceremony in Sydney.
