Suburban skyscraper: a sell-out success

A month after being granted a permit to build the largest development outside Melbourne’s CBD, the developers of Whitehorse Towers in Box Hill have announced that all 511 apartments have been sold.

A month after being granted a permit to build the largest development outside Melbourne’s CBD, the developers of Whitehorse Towers in Box Hill have announced that all 511 apartments have been sold.

Developed by the Asian Pacific Group, the mixed-use development comprises residential units, a hotel, and retail outlets.  Designed by Melbourne architect Peddle Thorpe, the development incorporates luxury dwellings that boast impressive views of the city. The dwellings were designed to utilize all hotel services, including room service and housekeeping.

The project features two towers, the taller of which stands at 115 meters.  Inside the shorter 84 meter tower is a 100-room hotel, part of the 5-star Art Series Hotel Group.  This will be the group’s seventh hotel.  They intend to expand to ten hotels by 2017.

William Deague, CEO of Asian Pacific Group and founder of the Art Series Hotel Group said: “After 18 months of planning, we are pleased to have witnessed such interest in the development.  We look forward to integrating into the local community, bringing our Art Series signature twist.  We hope to assist in attracting more business to the area and promote all that this thriving hub has to offer.

Jonathan Deague, Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Group added: “Two years ago we earmarked Box Hill as a place to invest for a number of reasons and we are already looking at other sites in the area.”

The commercial spaces on the ground floor have also been sold, and will incorporate recreational and retail outlets.  Residents, the local community, and hotel guests will be able to enjoy the development’s facilities, including restaurants, gym, pool and car park.

The news of the Whitehorse Towers sell-out comes just weeks after the nearby Banyule council opposed a similar skyscraper  after reports that particular building met with strong resistance from the council planners for its crude design, describing it as “harsh in appearance”.

Construction on the Whitehorse $330 million development will commence in two months.

    I live around the corner from this development. What a disgrace. It’s hard to think of how a project could be any less appropriate for its location. Is it any wonder there is scepticism for a planning process that allows such an enormous building that is just so incongruous with its location?!
