The National Gallery of Victoria presents its first exhibition of 2015, Nordic Cool: Modernist Design. From 28 February 2015, the new NGV exhibition will showcase nearly 100 pieces of homewares, decorative arts, furniture, glass, silver and textiles from the NGV’s rich collection of Nordic design.

This exhibition is the first time that the NGV’s collection of Nordic design has been shown in its entirety, and will explore the timeless and classic beauty of Scandinavian design. The design pieces will be presented as part of several elaborately styled interior “vignettes”, one of which is a dressing room complete with a vintage Marimekko dress and Hans Wegner’s 1950 Valet chair.

Some of the notable objects on display include Henning Koppel’s iconic silver Fish dish for Georg Jensen, and Finnish architect Alvar Aalto’s organic glass Savoy vase. Nordic cool will exhibit a range of ceramics from key design houses such as Sweden’s Gustavsberg and Rörstrand Porslinfabrik and Danish works by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory. The exhibition will also feature silver from Danish manufacturers Georg Jensen and A. Michelsen, whose tablewares are famously used by the Danish royal family.

On display will also be the NGV’s two new acquisitions of lighting design by Danish designer Paul Henningson.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public programmes including free floor talks with the curator.

Nordic Cool: Modernist Design will be on display at NGV International from 28 February 2015 to 31 December 2015. Open 10am-5pm, closed Tuesdays.

Free entry.
