On 19 February, NH Architecture and Major Projects Victoria will present a panel discussion of the major challenges of redeveloping Margaret Court Arena, followed by a guided tour of the Arena and its facilities.

Designed by NH Architecture and Populous, the newly revamped Margaret Court Arena opened to critical acclaim at the 2015 Australian Tennis Open.

The renovated Margaret Court Arena features a new retractable roof, which completely closes in under five minutes. It is the fastest retractable roof in Australia and allows matches to continue even in extreme weather events.

The roof design features a “copper penny” pleated profile, which reduces the structural depth of the roof, and also reflects some of the traditional elements of Melbourne architecture, particularly the sandstone, zinc and copper buildings along the Yarra River.

The innovative roof is part of a $366 million upgrade of Melbourne and Olympic Park precincts, which also include a revamped seating bowl for 7,500 spectators, new air conditioning, and acoustic technologies and concourse connection to the adjacent Rod Laver Arena. The project is also the first LEED accredited sports venue in Australia.

The evening event, hosted by ARC agency, will feature a talk by keynote speakers Astrid Jenkins and Wilko Doehring from NH Architecture and Penelope Blunden from Major Projects Victoria.

The Continuing Professional Development event will commence at 6pm, Thursday, 19 February 2015.

Where: Yarra Room at Melbourne and Olympic Park, on Batman Avenue, Melbourne.

Tickets: $45, available at
