Lexus Design Award captures Australian designer’s curiosity

November 7, 2013

With a theme of “Curiosity”, this year’s Lexus Design Awards have attracted an increased Australian contingent.

Lexus’ annual awards program garners global industry acclaim, and is attracting an increasing number of talented Australian entrants ready to take their designs to the world stage. The coveted Lexus Design Award is a platform for the latest generation of designers to showcase their talents in the fields of architecture industrial design, fashion, graphic design and education.

Apart from broadening their exposure by displaying their work at global design events, participants are given the opportunity to receive valuable feedback on their designs by leading industry professionals.

The numbers in the Australian contingent have increased by more than 150 percent over 2012. Along with entrants from around the world, a total of 2612 in all are competing for the coveted Lexus Design Award.

Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley is buoyed by the growing number of Australian participants in the LDA. “The total number of LDA applicants from around the world has grown by around 24 percent, but the numbers from Australia have grown by much more than that,” says Hanley.

“It’s a strong reminder of the depth of talent we have in this country. We’ll be watching closely to see who makes it through to exhibition in Milan and we’re hopeful it’ll be someone from Australia,” he adds.

Each year, the Lexus Design Awards are allocated a theme, this year’s being “Curiosity”. The theme is intended to explore the concept of applying curiosity in creative ways, to uncover innovative solutions through design.

Design Award Judges will be making final decisions based on entrants understanding of design concepts, originality of solutions and uniqueness of perspective.

Two of the 12 winners will have the opportunity to win funding for production costs, in order to create prototypes of their design under the guidance of experienced industry mentors. They will be announced at Milan Design Week 2014, while displays of the other 10 winning entries will be exhibited at Lexus Design Amazing.
