Restaurant and Bar Design Awards

Three Australian projects are among the winners at the 2013 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, announced in London earlier this month.

For the fifth year running, the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards have showcased the work of leading architects, interior designers and hospitality operators from the UK and internationally. The 2013 awards ceremony, held at London’s Farmiloe Building on Thursday 12 September, acknowledged a year of innovation and imagination in restaurant and bar design.

The winning projects were selected from more than 670 submissions from 60 different countries.

Höst Copenhagen by Norm Architects

 

 

Höst in Denmark, by Norm Architects, took home the award for Best Restaurant, one of the more anticipated categories of the night. The night’s other highly coveted award for Best Bar went to Foster + Partners for its Atrium Champagne Bar, located at the new ME Hotel in London.

Alfred & Constance in Brisbane by Derlot

 

Winning projects located in Australia included the colourful and eclectic Alfred and Constance, a bar and restaurant in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley designed by Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot, which received the award for best bar in the Australia Pacific region.

Tony Hobba Architects’ Third Wave Kiosk – a compact, steel-wrapped kiosk located in Torquay, Victoria – was also successful on the night, receiving the award in the Canteen category.

The Century in Sydney, designed by Paring Onions Design

 

Sydney’s modern Chinese restaurant The Century, designed by Hong Kong practice Paring Onions Design, was the third Australian winner, receiving the award for best restaurant in the Australia Pacific region.

The awards ceremony included a unique pop-up bar and restaurant concept, the Fifth Box Project, named in recognition of the awards’ fifth anniversary. The Fifth Box Project was designed by the program’s own team of event partners and purpose-built as the night’s main ceremonial stage and pop-up food space.

This year’s winning entries were chosen by a judging panel of renowned industry experts including Mourad Mazouz, restaurateur; Tamara Lohan, founder and CTO of Mr & Mrs Smith; Sandy Suffield, creative director of Wolff Olins; David Kester, director at Thames & Hudson; and Stephen Alden, CEO Maybourne Hotel Group.
