AIA joins Australian Design Alliance

September 5, 2013

The Australian Institute of Architects has become a full member of the Australian Design Alliance, which advocates for a national design policy.

The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) is the most recent addition to the Australian Design Alliance (AdA). A supporter since the AdA’s launch in 2010, the AIA has now become the thirteenth full member of the alliance, which aims to unify national creative interests. The AdA already includes representatives from a range of disciplines including furniture, automotive and urban design through to interior, graphic and fashion design.

AdA Patron, His Excellency Michael Bryce AM AE, expressed his delight in welcoming the AIA as full members of the alliance. “Architecture is the fulcrum of our national design identity and this highly visible art form leads the way in so many other design endeavours,” Bryce said.

Chairman of the AdA, Oliver Kratzer, said he is looking forward to working more closely with the AIA on the issues that impact the design sector and the nation as a whole. “Our core objective is to see design-led innovation become an integral part of Australian business,” Kratzer said.

“Australia has some of the best designers in the world, capable of developing world-class products and services, however, there still remains a lack of understanding of the true benefits of design as a key driver of economic growth in Australia.” He stated.

The AIA introduces an additional 12,000 members to the AdA’s combined national membership of 140,000. Existing AdA members include the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA), Planning Institute of Australia – Urban Design Chapter, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), and Good Design Australia, among others.
