Tony Parker’s Mid-Century range at Workshopped

May 15, 2013

Workshopped and Covemore Designs are reintroducing selected pieces from Australian furniture design veteran Tony Parker’s classic Mid-Century range.

Workshopped has announced that it will reintroduce selected pieces from Australian furniture design veteran Tony Parker’s Mid-Century range.

In collaboration with Covemore Designs, which works with Parker and employs several other tradespeople from the Parker furniture era, Workshopped will offer Tony Parker furniture on a made-to-order basis.

In 1948, Tony Parker joined his father Jack’s company Dagger & Parker, which made short batches of quality furniture for Grace Bros, Sydney. After completing a course in industrial design, he spent time in London honing his design skills and designing contemporary furniture for department store John Lewis. Upon returning to Sydney, he set out to expand his father’s operation by developing the Mid-Century furniture range. By this time, the company had evolved to become JW Parker (Furniture) Pty Ltd.

The Mid-Century range proved very popular, featuring in Australian homes for years to follow.

Of the range’s reintroduction, Parker says: “It is fitting that Covemore Designs, whose craftsmen are ex-employees of mine and skilled in the making of fine furniture, are now partnering with Workshopped to reintroduce selected pieces from the early Mid-Century range”.

“Workshopped are well known for promoting and supporting Australian design … and have identified and embraced the opportunity of the rebirth of these designs,” Parker continues. “It is … pleasing that these early designs of the sixties are once more becoming popular with the discerning customer in Australia”.

Just like the originals, each piece of furniture from the range will be made to order from a range of timbers, finishes and fabrics, says Workshopped director Raymond Scott.

“The craftsmanship is outstanding, and we think there’ll be considerable excitement in people being able to own original, high quality Australian-designed and manufactured furniture.”

All pieces in the range are manufactured by Covemore Designs’ Sydney factory and are available exclusively through Workshopped.
