The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards have announced Tomek Archer as the 2012 winner of the SOYA365 Architecture & Interior Design award.

The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA) today announced Tomek Archer as the 2012 winner of the inaugural SOYA365 Architecture & Interior Design category award.

Chosen from over 100 young designers who submitted work into the category this year, Archer will receive $5000 in cash, a trip to Barcelona in November and a 12-month mentorship opportunity with architect Brian Zulaikha – founding partner of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects and current president of the Australian Institute of Architects.

“Informed by his wonderful furniture design, which he infuses with a real spirit of materiality and construction, he is able to delve into architectural form and space with a surprising maturity,” says Zulaikha of Archer’s work.

After starting Tomahawk Studios in 2003 as a platform for applied research projects alongside his architectural studies, Archer’s work has been acquired into state and private collections in Australia and Europe. Using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and innovative digital production, all Tomahawk Studios products are produced in Archer’s native Sydney. His work has received a number of awards, including an Australian DesignMark at the Australian International Design Awards.

Zulaikha describes Archer’s Darlinghurst office fitout as “fresh and robust, where a strong idea overcomes any shortcomings in the constraints of cost and programme”.

Three young designers have been named as runners up to Archer (the first recipient of the Architecture & Interior Design award): Samson Tiew, Robert Smith and Michael Ong.
