Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award 2011

September 13, 2011

Top ten finalists for this year’s Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award revealed.

The top ten finalists for the ninth annual Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award have been announced.

The ten finalists were selected from a pool of over 60 entries by a judging panel including Heidi Dokulil, Liane Rossler, Jennifer Sanders, Terri Winter, Ewan McEoin and Richard Waller.

The 2011 finalists are:
Flynn Talbot for X & Y
Henry Wilson for A Joint
Kristian Aus for Dottie
Dominic Broadhurst for Scale
Duncan Meerding for Cracked Log Lamp
The Evie Group (Alexandra Gilmour & Dominic Chong) for Spun Lamps
Marc Harrison for Husque Jug
Dennis Abalos for Woven
Alexander Fitzpatrick for Light Garden
Dale Hardiman for Kids Straw Stool

The design prize, held annually since 2003, supports the Australian design industry by promoting awareness of local design and providing valuable commercial assistance to emerging designers. Along with cash prizes, the award includes a trip to an international design fair for the winner that will help build the commercial success of the designer’s work.

Judge Terri Winter, founder of top3 by design, said this year’s entries could be described as “thoughtful, innovative and retrospective”. Fellow judge Richard Waller, Editor of Inside Out Magazine, added that the entries possessed “a real emphasis on craft, whether it is just the look of the actual object, or a sense of how it’s made and the process by which the work is brought to life.”

The winner of first prize receives $30,000 to assist in the commercial development of their design, along with a trip to a leading design fair of their choice from Index in Denmark, Design Miami or Interieur design fair in Belgium. Four runners up each receive a $2,500 cash prize, and the remaining five finalists will be presented with a $1,000 cash prize.

Winners will be announced at a gala event at the MCA in Sydney on Thursday 27 October.
