Chasing Kitsune

July 20, 2011

HASSELL launches Chasing Kitsune, a Japanese food truck created for the 2011 State of Design Festival.

A group of designers at HASSELL have created a Japanese food truck for this year’s State of Design Festival, in response to the festival theme ‘Design that Moves’.

The design team have created their own version of the Yatai – a Japanese style food truck – by converting an ordinary rental van into a mobile kitchen that will pop-up at different locations on each night of the festival.

The truck is named after a mythical fox from Japanese culture. In Japanese folklore, the clever ‘kitsune’ (the fox) assumes human form and only reveals its true self at night. Like the fox, HASSELL’s design appears to be an ordinary truck when packed up, and only reveals its true form at night, when the van’s side is lifted up to reveal the kitchen inside. A series of timber boxes that stack together for storage inside the truck will be used to provide seating and standing room around the truck.

The design has been fitted out in collaboration with Schiavello, with glow-printed graphics and branding by SeeSaw Design. Food is provided by South Yarra’s MoPho restaurant and celebrated chef KinSan, served with Asahi beer and sake from Robot Ninja Sake.

Chasing Kitsune was launched last night, in the laneway outside HASSELL’s Melbourne office on Little Collins Street. The truck will now be on the move each evening for the duration of the State of Design Festival, encouraging visitors to chase the fox and interact with the project. You can track the location of the truck by using the State of Design iPhone app, or by following Chasing Kitsune on facebook and twitter.
