Promoting the benefits of high quality place-making in New Zealand, a new biennial awards program has been announced. The inaugural New Zealand Urban Design Awards, to take place in November, has been established to acknowledge urban design projects in New Zealand.

The awards will be split into two categories: Built Projects, which includes urban design-based projects constructed since 2000; and Envisaging projects, comprising urban design-based projects that prepare planning frameworks for new urban developments or for the redevelopment of existing sites.

Supporting the new awards are a string of organisations including: New Zealand Institute of Architects, New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, Property Council New Zealand, New Zealand Planning Institute and New Zealand Urban Design Forum.

Entries are now open, and will close at 3pm on Friday 14 September 2012. The winners will be announced on 8 November 2012.
