Niche Media appoints Simon Sellars to the role of editor on Architectural Review Australia.

Niche Media is proud to announce the appointment of Simon Sellars to the position of editor of Architectural Review Australia. Simon has an extensive publishing profile, with more than a decade’s experience as both a writer and editor, and promises to bring an engaging new critical perspective to the title and its editorial direction.

Simon’s writing on architecture and urbanism has been published in Architectural Design, Architecture Australia, Blueprint, Dwell, Steel Profile and the edited collections Infrastructure as Architecture: Designing Composite Networks and J.G. Ballard: Visions and Revisions. He is known for his extensive research into the work of novelist J.G. Ballard, particularly urban themes in the author’s writing, through the website, a series of published articles and two forthcoming books: Applied Ballardianism (Zer0 Books; 2012) and Extreme Metaphors (HarperCollins; 2012).

Since 2007 Simon has been employed primarily in academia, where in addition to teaching and publishing he has overseen the production of a variety of journals and book publications. In 2010, he worked as a researcher on the Plastic Futures project (at the intersection of speculative architecture, design and biotech) for RMIT University’s Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory.

Simon’s own research focuses on the future potentialities of urban space, including the new roles and possibilities for architects in a time of increasingly complex urbanisation. With a background in cultural studies and critical theory, he is interested in how architecture, like other forms of cultural production, can be both a mirror and a catalyst for society’s hopes, fears and desires. He is also versed in the new roles that architecture media can play, and the challenges it faces, in an age of omniscient online criticism and digital social spaces.

Simon is looking forward to helping to showcase the country’s architecture through Architectural Review Australia, as well as further enhancing the magazine’s reputation as Australian architecture media’s most distinctive voice.
