1 Bligh Street named best Australasian tall building

June 15, 2012

Australia’s first ‘green skyscraper’, 1 Bligh Street, named the best tall building in Australasia by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

The first high-rise in Australia to be awarded six Green Stars as well as NSW’s highest Green Star rating is well deserving of this recent accolade.

Australia’s first ‘green skyscraper’, 1 Bligh Street has been named the best tall building in Australasia by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Designed by Architectus and Ingehoven Architekten, 1 Bligh Street is the first Australian building to have won the award. According to jury member Werner Sobek, it was the building’s naturally ventilated sky-lit atrium that impressed the judges: “The dramatic, naturally ventilated central atrium connects the office workers with nature at the inner depths of the plan, giving a sense of openness for the entire building”.

Judging was based on design and technical innovations, sustainable attributes and the enhancement of both cities and the lives of their inhabitants. “The winners display remarkable creativity, as well as a respect for the environment, connection with place and the urban surroundings”, comments committee chairperson, Richard Cook.

One of four regional best tall building winners, 1 Bligh Street now goes into the running for the World’s Best Tall Building at the 11th Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The other regional winners are Absolute Towers in Mississauga, Canada; Palazzo Lombardia, Milan, Italy and Doha Tower, Qatar.
