Sydney Design Awards launch

May 17, 2012

The organisers behind the Melbourne Design Awards prepare to launch the inaugural Sydney Design Awards, a unique program that combines jury and peer assessment with public voting.

The organisers behind the Melbourne Design Awards have announced they are taking the program to Sydney, with the inaugural Sydney Design Awards launching on Tuesday 22 May at the Beresford Hotel.

The broad scope of the program covers six categories: Space, Visual, Object, Fashion, Experience and Marketplace – recognising excellence in disciplines including architecture, interiors, landscape design, products and furnishings, fashion and photography.

The program features an unusual format that encompasses public and peer voting, a structure that is designed to reveal finalists and winners that represent the voice of both the market and the industry. Entries to the awards are shortlisted by a panel of professionals, with judging then opened up to the public. The awards are open to emerging and professional designers, studios and educational institutions in Australia and internationally.

The awards are presented by design advocacy group design100, which aims to create recognition for designers and increase business outcomes through various programs including the Melbourne Design Awards and Emerging Design.

“Design is about commerce and culture. The Sydney Design Awards have been established in response to the need for an award with a Sydney focus recognising that each state has its own pace of commerce and flavour of culture,” says design100 creative director Mark Bergin. “We found, through the development and ongoing success of the Melbourne Design Awards, a need to recognise and award the Sydney design industry.”

Entries open on Tuesday 22 May at www.sydneydesignawards.com.au and close 11 July. The top five entries in each category will be announced as finalists on 2 August and winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony on 13 September.
