World Architecture Festival heads to Singapore

April 19, 2012

The World Architecture Festival moves to Asia to celebrate its fifth successive year, relocating from Barcelona to Singapore for the 2012 event.

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is celebrating its fifth successive year with a new host city, relocating from Barcelona to Singapore for this year’s event.

Held at the WAF award-winning Marina Bay Sands resort designed by Moshe Safdie, the 2012 event will take place on 3-5 October. The program for the event includes presentations, exhibitions, keynote presentations and seminars. The WAF Awards will again be a key focus of the event, with all shortlisted entrants presenting their designs to international judging panels.

Organisers said Singapore was chosen as the new venue for the festival because of the city’s diverse architectural styles, rich cultural heritage and evident belief in the power of design – demonstrated by the President’s Design Awards and the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize.

Paul Finch, WAF Program Director said: “Since our inaugural Festival in 2008, WAF has evolved into a truly global event, annually attracting thousands of architects and designers from across the world. Following four fantastic years in Barcelona we feel the time is right to move the Festival to a new location, and where better to celebrate our fifth birthday than at Moshe Safdie’s award-winning Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.”

Architects on the jury this year include Kerry Hill, Richard Hassell and Wong Mun Summ from WOHA, Juergen Mayer H., and Ivan Harbour from Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

Also on the 2012 jury are Ben van Berkel from UNStudio, Mok Wei Wei from W Architects, Kongjian Yu from Turesnscape, Marcio Kogan from Studio MK27, Tanh Guan Bee from Tangguanbee Architects, Edouard Francois from Maison d’Architecture Eduoard Francois, Ole Scheeren from Buro Ole Scheeren and Sanjay Puri, Sanjay Puri Architects.

The festival will be held from 3 – 5 October, 2012.
Entries to the WAF Awards open on May  1st and close June 3rd.
