ROTHELOWMAN, HASSELL and Peddle Thorp Architects recognised at Victorian UDIA awards.

The winners of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Victorian awards have been announced.

Projects by architecture practices ROTHELOWMAN, HASSELL and Peddle Thorp Architects were recognised for excellence in urban development and the built form.

ROTHELOWMAN’s Charlie, a residential development in Richmond, Melbourne comprising 96 apartments and nine townhouses, won the High Density category. Architect Shane Rothe said of the project: “The dynamism and energy of Richmond provided the perfect backdrop for a progressive yet elegant design aimed at appealing to clients who thrive on inner city living.”

HASSELL’s scheme for University Hill in Bundoora was awarded the top accolade in the Master Planned development category. The 104ha site, developed by MAB Corporation, is described by HASSELL as an ‘urban village’ located within 20km of Melbourne’s CBD.

The Urban Renewal award was presented to two projects: the Denton Mills redevelopment by Peddle Thorp Architects – housed in a former hat factory in Abbotsford; and Edgewater at Maribyrnong – a former munitions manufacturing site redeveloped by Delfin Lend Lease.

Other winners included Affinity at Eden Rise, which won the Residential Development 250 lots or fewer and the Affordable Development awards; Woodland Waters, which won the Residential Development more than 250 lots; and Edgecliff on the beach, awarded in the Medium Density category.

The Environmental Excellence category was won by Eynesbury Township, while the Special Purpose living award was presented to Yarrbat Place.

The Victorian submissions will be among the nominations for the UDIA National Awards, which will be announced in March 2011.
