New President for DIA

December 16, 2010

The Design Institute of Australia announces industrial designer Oliver Kratzer as new National President.

Industrial designer Oliver Kratzer has been appointed as the National President of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), following a 12-year involvement with the organisation.

Kratzer is the founder and director of Sydney-based industrial design consultancy Ideal Industrial and, during his twelve years as a DIA member, has been the NSW State President for three years, National Treasurer for two years, DIA Vice President for a year and National President Elect for one year. Kratzer’s appointment follows a two-year term by outgoing President Joanne Cys.

Kratzer says he will advocate for the relationship between design and business to encourage growth of the creative industries. “I think there are bright skies ahead as a new generation of managers and executives emerge with an appreciation and understanding of the role that design can play in business.

He continued: “One of the challenges in industry is to make sure the voice of design is heard properly; it’s ensuring that people get the right message as to what design is about. The DIA is doing a great job, but there is also room for improvement. We have an excellent structure and now is the time to get the machine really humming along.”

Of his new appointment, he said: “I see myself as getting in there, empowering people at the grass-roots level, underpinning the strength of the institute and its support of the industry.”

Kratzer has an extensive portfolio ranging from truck rear vision mirrors to shampoo bottles for haircare company Fudge. He has been recognised by the design industry in the United States, jointly receiving the industry’s top honour, the Gold Industrial Design Excellence Award, for his practice’s work on JLG Profit.
