Design for Singapore University of Technology revealed

December 1, 2010

A design from UNStudio and DP Architects has been chosen for Singapore University of Technology and Design campus.

Dutch architectural design practice UNStudio and Singapore firm DP Architects have been selected to design the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

Chosen from a shortlist of five practices, UNStudio + DP Architects proposed a design to reflect the university’s curriculum by “using the creative enterprise of the school to facilitate a cross-disciplinary interface; interaction is established between the professional world, the campus, and the community at large.”

The campus for Singapore’s fourth university is designed around two living and learning spines that overlap to create a central point and join all corners of the university. The thoroughfares create a 24/7 campus, designed to increase direct interaction and bring professionals, students and faculty members together in social and academic environments.

UNStudio co-founder Ben van Berkel said: “The main aim of the design for the Singapore University of Technology and Design was to create a campus that celebrates both teaching and learning in an open and transparent way. The network of horizontal, vertical and diagonal vistas within the double quadrant organisation of the campus enables professors, students and faculty members to see, meet and communicate with each other through a network of crossing points, presenting opportunities for continuous interaction and exchange.”

The new university will offer four principle academic pillars, comprising Architecture and Sustainable Design, Engineering Product Development, Engineering Systems and Design as well as Information Systems Technology and Design. It is hoped the new campus will act as a catalyst and conveyor for innovation and growth.
