Flinders Street Station competition adviser appointed

Former Architectural Review Australia Editor-in-Chief appointed as competition adviser for the international Flinders Street Station Design Competition.

Major Projects Victoria has appointed the competition adviser for the forthcoming Flinders Street Station Design Competition.

Andrew Mackenzie of CityLab, an independent consultancy working with public and private organisations to help with the delivery of design competitions, was appointed to the position in January. Mackenzie will work as an impartial intermediary between the State, the competition jury, the Project Steering Committee and the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).

Mackenzie has worked in the architectural industry for 20 years, and was Editor-in-Chief of Architectural Review Australia for nine years. After leaving magazine publishing in 2011, Mackenzie established CityLab to assist in the delivery of design competitions. He has worked with Brisbane Airport Corporation on the BNE: Making Connections competition, assisted Waterfront Auckland with the Auckland Waterfront Hotel competition and has also worked with South Australia’s Integrated Design Commission.

As the competition adviser, Mackenzie will help prepare the competition brief and conditions, assist in the resolution of the competition process, and manage all correspondence between entrants and the jury and competition organisers. He will work closely with the Probity Adviser, Anne Dalton & Associates and the Legal Adviser.

The State Government announced the $1m Flinders Street Station competition in November 2011, calling for a revival of the landmark site in Melbourne’s CBD with designs for a new “gateway public space” for the 4.7-hectare site. The international design competition will require entrants to consider heritage aspects of the station building while also proposing a better civic space that engages with surrounding precincts such as Federation Square, the Yarra’s northern bank and the pedestrian routes running from the CBD to the river.

The competition will follow a two-stage structure according to AIA guidelines, with initial concepts submitted by mid 2012 and second round proposals due in 2013.
