Unitised ArchiPAD

October 25, 2010

The Unitised ArchiPAD, a one-bedroom apartment constructed using sustainable design and construction techniques, is currently on display in Melbourne’s Federation Square as part of National Architecture Week.

The ArchiPAD has been developed by Nonda Katsalidis for VicUrban’s The Nicholson project in Coburg, an $80 million development encompassing a range of housing types – some of which will be subsidised by the Federal Government’s National Rental Affordable Housing Scheme.

The video below shows the ArchiPAD being installed in Fed Square. Constructed off-site in the Unitised Building factory, the unit was transported in its finished form – complete with all internal fixtures, fittings and appliances, carpets, balcony and front door.

The structural technology for this project, developed by Unitised Building, enables accelerated on-site and off-site construction, meaning high rise residential projects can be constructed in around half the time with less material use, minimised construction waste and reduced costs. The Unitised Building team says the technique also offers more design freedom to architects, compared with other prefabricated models.

“The Unitised ArchiPAD showcases the ability to design and build high density housing that is both affordable and sustainable, while maintaining design integrity. The wide range of applications is something our industry is very excited about,” says architect Shelley Roberts, National Architecture Week coordinator.

The ArchiPAD will be on display in Fed Square from 8am to 8pm throughout National Architecture Week, which runs from 24 until 30 October 2010.

The Nicholson is currently under construction and due for completion in May 2011.
