GBCA to test new Green Star ratings tool on public buildings.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) is seeking expressions of interest from building projects to participate in the testing process for the council’s new Green Star ratings tool for public buildings.

Announcing the new Green Star Public Building PILOT rating tool in Brisbane this week, GBCA Chief Executive Romilly Madew said the new rating would be applicable to buildings including law courts, museums, art galleries and places of worship.

“This new tool means that industry has access to best practice benchmarks for public buildings, as well as a system of independently-verified certification which clearly demonstrates the sustainability credentials of leading public buildings around Australia,” she said.

The new ratings tool will be tested on a number of selected pilot projects. The GBCA is currently seeking expressions of interest for projects to participate in the trial – eligibility criteria can be viewed at ["www.gbca.org.au":http://www.gbca.org.au/]

This latest tool is based on existing Green Star rating tools, with some customisation and additions – including a revised water category, revised materials calculator and methodology for assessing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as an updated management category.

As well as the cost benefits of running a building that is energy and water efficient, Madew stressed that Green Star buildings were also likely to attract more grants and subsidies, and build a positive and ethical image for governments, companies, councils and community organisations. “By integrating green principles into our public buildings, we will be leaving the community with a lasting legacy – and a more cost effective one,” she said.
