Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award finalists announced

Ten finalists announced for prestigious Australian design awards for 2010.

The ten finalists for the prestigious Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award for 2010 have been announced. Now in its eighth year, the annual award aims to reward emerging Australian designers and assist them in establishing their careers.

This year’s finalists are:

Daniel.Emma (Daniel To & Emma Aiston) ‘Basics Collection’
["David Knott ‘Cantilabra’":]
John Quan ‘Flexible Desk Lamp’
Michael Hoppe ‘Hitman’
Nick Rennie ‘Labbro’ and ‘Organis’
Toby Horrocks ‘Flatform Shelf’

Three finalists for 2010 – Adam Cornish, Daniel.Emma and David Knott – were also finalists in the ["2009 awards":]. The submissions for this year featured a diverse range of materials and focused on functional design solutions, combining practicality and beauty.

The ten finalists will now present their entry piece and design portfolio to the judging panel and winners will be announced at an exclusive ceremony in Sydney in November. The entries will then be presented as part of the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Exhibition.

The judging panel this year includes Editor-in-chief of Belle and Good Food magazines Neale Whitaker, Liane Rossler from Dinosaur Designs, Heidi Dokulil from Parcel, UTS Professor of Design Kees Dorst, Ewan McEoin from Propeller Communications, Top3 by Design’s Terri Winter and design expert Jennifer Sanders.

The winner will receive a $30,000 prize and a trip to Milan for the 2011 Salone del Mobile International Design Fair. Four runners up will receive $2,500 each and the remaining five finalists will receive $1,000.

The award has previously been won by ["Rohan Nicol":], Jon Goulder, Adam Goodrum, Lucas Chirnside, Charles Wilson, BernabeiFreeman, Trent Jansen and Ilias Fotopoulos.
