Audio Design Museum launches

July 22, 2010

Kate Rhodes and Viviane Stappmanns transform the city streets into a vibrant gallery, exploring the creative hotspots of Australian cities.

“No gallery space could ever be big enough to capture the creativity of an entire city.” This is how independent Melbourne designer Kate Rhodes describes the inspiration behind a new series of walking tours, developed as part of the State of Design Festival.

The Audio Design Museum has been co-curated by Rhodes and designer Viviane Stappmanns. Using their own extensive knowledge of the cities’ creative industries, the duo has created “an unusual approach to experiencing creativity” in metropolitan centres.

The series of guided audio tours of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will allow residents and visitors to explore the creative precincts of Australia’s capital cities. An initiative of Object: Australian Centre for Craft & Design, the audio tours include podcasts narrated with personal stories and anecdotes from 100 local designers, accompanied by maps and imagery.

The tours will be available to download for free as podcasts to iPhones, iPods and MP3 players from ["www.audiodesignmuseum.com":http://www.audiodesignmuseum.com/] and visitors can choose tours based on either urban precincts or design themes.

Melbourne precinct tours cover areas including well-known fashion strip Gertrude Street, as well as the warehouse-turned-design studios of Flinders Lane. Precinct tours for Sydney, due to launch in mid-August, detail the key design aspects of Surry Hills & Darlinghurst, and Paddington. Brisbane tours will follow in October.

The Audio Design Museum is part of Object’s Spring Series 2010 program. For a full program of the series, visit ["www.object.com.au/springseries":http://www.object.com.au/springseries/].
