Rapid prototyping exhibition debuts in Sydney

May 19, 2010

Exhibition of sculptures produced using 3D printing technology to open at Sydney’s Object Gallery.

_Inside Out_, a sculpture exhibition featuring work created using rapid prototyping technology, will open in Sydney on 5 June at Object Gallery.

The exhibition showcases the work of 46 designers and artists from Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Each piece was created using 3D computer modelling software, and then made physical through the process of 3D printing.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Art Technology Coalition, UTS and RMIT in Australia, along with De Montfort University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Dartington College of Arts at University College Falmouth in the United Kingdom.

Claire Smith, Principal Curator and Coordinator (Australia) says the exhibition allowed artists and designers – some of whom had never previously worked with 3D computer modelling – to explore digital design technologies that are “generally unavailable due to the high manufacturing costs involved”.

Director of Object Gallery, Steven Pozel, said Object was delighted to support projects that encourage experimentation and innovation: “Projects like _Inside Out_ showcase the critical relationship between new technologies and creativity and provide audiences the chance to see groundbreaking technology that will shape our worlds tomorrow.”

_Inside Out_ will run in Object Gallery’s project space from 5 June – 25 July 2010.
