Recently opening at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney, Grain is a sumptuous new bar designed by Michael McCann of Dreamtime Australia Design.
Unsurprisingly, Grain is a bar to feel comfortable in. With a decidedly masculine feel to his oeuvre, Michael McCann has created a bar that is male without being blokey or anathema to women. In effect, he has utilised the materials of the traditional male interior (leather, timber, stone and metal) with a level of finesse that elevates beyond the cliché of the sports bar or smoking room milieu.
Using cladding predominantly of cherry wood, McCann has exponentially increased the timber’s warmth and visual presence by having metal finish specialists, Axolotl, inlay copper to mark out a distinctive geometric design. Also by Axolotl, working with artist, Mark Lovelock, is a fireplace of copper-clad rocks that glow below a flame not dissimilar in effect to the work of Elena Colombo.
The warmth of the walls is further softened by seating in butter-soft leather in a warm shade reminiscent of cigar box timber. That this seating is exceptionally comfortable adds to the overall ambience and make it incredibly easy to while away an afternoon looking out onto the bustle of Circular Quay.
Drainage is often the forgotten workhorse of the building and design function. Yet drainage maintains a simple albeit vital purpose.
