Located on the backstreets of semi-industrial Fitzroy in Melbourne, Industry Beans Café & Restaurant by Figureground Architects is an inventively converted warehouse space. The expansive venue exudes a sense of warmth and spatial intimacy, showcasing the inventive food on offer while facilitating a creative work space for staff.

Upon entering Industry Beans, the café is full of a particular local ambience, with the urban scale and signature moodiness of Melbourne a key point of reference throughout. The hallway’s internal façade features black painted wooden pallets, which continue over the ceiling to provide cross ventilation and a functional dynamic element above. This action is echoed in ground floor windows which open to reveal dining spaces, and facilitate a dialogue between internal and exterior space.

Fixed and loose furniture is considerately arranged to provide all patrons a variety of seating options, to view the space from every angle. The long and narrow internal dining hall references the unique sense of height from the surrounding laneways. Other materials such as plywood and polycarbonate define adjacent walls. Though the interior is clad in dark tiles and timber, Industry Beans maximises the potential for light via the existing roller door, a feature common to the industrial neighbourhood.

Skilfully resolving the volume of space, and maintaining the quality and access to natural light, the team at Figureground Architects have revamped an old building with an exemplary display of interior architecture and design. From the hipster brewed coffee to the considered bespoke fit out, Industry Beans Café & Restaurant presents an Instagram-worthy place to dine in Melbourne on a weekend.
