This year, the Big Design Market returns to take over Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building in December - just in time for Christmas. Following their enormously popular markets in 2012 and 2013, the third is set to turn the hallowed exhibition space into a bustling hub for contemporary local design with a kaleidoscopic cornucopia of goods.

The market is set up as a tailored pop-up shopping experience, catering perfectly for those on mission for Christmas presents with a curated selection of original and handmade home wares, stationery, books, fashion, children's toys and clothes. Among this year's highlights are sustainable designers Fold Theory with their environment-conscious furniture, trendy vintage bike brand Papillionaire Bicycles, The Little Veggie Patch Co.'s raised garden bed systems and quirky feature lighting by Brunswick-based practice Volker Haug.

Local design talent will be sure to draw large crowds, with textile, design and craft queen Beci Orpin hosting free creative workshops along with Melbourne designer Georgie Cummings. Children will likewise be occupied in the play area by a range of free entertainment and craft activities. Another exciting creative contribution to the event will be artist Maryann Talia Pau, who will present her One Million Stars Project installation with an array of woven stars strewn throughout the 7000 square metre exhibition building.

Hungry browsers will be fuelled by casual street food, with rice paper rolls by MissChu and gourmet sandwiches by Earl Canteen. Moo Brew will showcase their local craft beer, and the macaron lounge will serve champagne.

Artist and designer Simon Obarzanek oversees The Big Design Market, billing it as a unique event, “with  225  designers  from   Australia  and  New  Zealand  as  well  as  retailers  representing  designers  from  all  over  the  world.”
